Text Box: Anew single story multi-wing nursing home has been constructed for military veterans residing in New York State.

Perkins Eastman Architects retained K&L to provide complete design services for the facility's HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems.

This 150,000 SF facility contains 250 beds for patients in need of health care in a residential type environment. All mechanical systems were designed with emphasis on comfort, energy efficiency and ease of maintenance. The facility contains a 550-ton water cooled electric centrifugal chiller plant along with an aesthetically compliant cooling tower. Peripheral building heat for the common areas is provided by a 12,000 MBH dual fuel boiler plant having twin boilers, primary-secondary water circulation pumping loops and fin tube radiation.

In an effort to enhance occupant comfort as well as reduce facility maintenance operations, all patient rooms were designed with valence-mounted dual temperature water coils. These fanless units operate with chilled or hot water depending on season, thereby eliminating the need for thru-wall units, fan coil units or unit ventilators. Patient rooms are therefore less obstructed and more space efficient. Total building fan energy is reduced, thus resulting in lower operating costs. VAV type air handling systems were designed for open and common areas. The mechanical systems are controlled through a building automation system.

Construction cost was $43 million.
