Text Box: K&L was retained to determine, from both engineering and economic standpoints, the optimum systems for providing year around heating and air conditioning and also, to review, evaluate and recommend building lighting and electrical system for the main branch of New York City's Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. In view of the historic status of this landmark building, major emphasis was placed on maintaining and preserving the architectural integrity and design of the building.

For year-round heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, K&L determined:

-	Design criteria for room temperatures,  	humidities, air cleanliness and acoustical 	considerations;
-	heating, ventilating and air conditioning 	loads;
-	electrical loads for fans, pumps and 	refrigeration equipment compatible with 	electric service, main power feeders, and 	switchboards;
-	engineering for a central air conditioning 	system;
-	air conditioning distribution systems for all 	the different areas of the entire library;
-	feasible and economical locations and 	space requirements for mechanical rooms, 	shaft space, ductwork and electric conduit 	locations;
-	specifications for the recommended air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

K&L made recommendations and cost estimates for the modification of the interior electrical distribution system, and main electric service from the utility company, Con Ed. The existing systems of the library were evaluated for their affect on the new air conditioning systems, and lighting levels were established. K&L recommended fire protection systems and methods to prevent water damage to the library's priceless book collection.
